Photos of fire
They're still uploading as I write this, but I've put a set of photos of fire on Flickr.
All of the photos were taken at the highest resolution my camera allows (3072x2304), were taken at the highest JPEG quality setting the camera allow and were taken with a simulated film type of ISO64. In short, they're at about as high a technical quality as my camera is capable of producing. Each image is about 3MB, and the entire set comes to about 1.2GB.
I tweaked shutter speed and aperture settings to get the effects that I wanted.
All the photos in that set are CC-By, which means you can do just about whatever you want with them, so longs as you give credit. Additionally, you can download the full-size images, embed, order prints, etc...I opened up all the permissions I could find.

The coolest photo I've taken to date. (<1024x768 version)
I happened across a site that asked people to take pictures of themselves and some sort of association with the word "MOO", without faking it. (i.e. without digital alterations, I suppose. They said "put some work into it, like the rest of us.")
I don't have an external flash, nor do I have an external snap trigger. To get this image, I had the word MOO display on my laptop screen, and used the magnifying glass you see in the picture to focus the projection of the image on my laptop screen onto my face.
I couldn't find my tripod, so I had to set up my camera across the room, use the autofocus to focus it on the chair where my head would be, set the camera to manual focus, turn off the lights, set the snap delay to 10 seconds, then hightail it back to the chair and get the magnifying glass in position.
To make sure the "MOO" was focused and in the right place when the snap took place, I had the electronic viewfinder hooked up to my 22" LCD TV, so I could see and get it focused.
The camera was set to shutter priority, ISO64, with a 4sec shutter speed, and the camera was allowed to select an appropriate aperture setting. I had to turn up the brightness on my laptop screen so that enough unfocused light would fall that my face could be seen in addition to the MOO.

On fighting on two fronts
So I frequently get in philosophical debates with my two most senior coworkers. It's a lot of fun, and we regularly touch those topics which aren't considered polite among friends--politics, religion, abortion, evolution, economics, etc. All that stuff people kill each other over in some other countries. But we have different opinions, viewpoints and degrees of tolerance, yet still end up having a healthy debate and exchange of information and ideas.
I've noticed that they each have very different styles of debate, if one defines a style as the types of arguments and counterarguments, approaches taken, sources of material, concepts and presuppositions, etc. One of them I can debate against quite effectively, usually breaking down the arguments and using them and their requisite assumptions in more effective counterarguments. I have a harder time debating the other coworker, but I can usually hold my own for quite a while. (I don't have a good metric for this; Debates get paused and resumed, multiplexed with other debates, etc.)
When I have a really hard time is when I'm on one side, of a debate, and they're both on the other side. (Actually, we each have a hard time in that position, and each such scenario happens occasionally.) I run into a problem where the the stipulations, assumptions and allowable assumed interpretations for when I'm debating one of them aren't all also valid for debates with the other, so I end up having to put in four times the work to try to make the same point. And making supporting arguments is even more difficult, because there are precious few complex and sophisticated stipulations that hold true for both of them, so I frequently wind up going deeper and deeper when making my supporting arguments, usually getting stuck somewhere in the realm of theoretical science.
"Theoretical science? You're not qualified to debate and discuss that. Why go there?"
Yes, theoretical science. No, I'm not qualified to go there. But I keep winding up there because I'm forced to back up assumptions about everyday phenomena with the underlying principles, and then have to back up the principles that underly those, and then...you see where this is going.
And as soon as we hit the level where popularly reported science hasn't figured out what's going on, then I'm stuck and have lost the debate about something that started as mundane as why people have babies, or how many generations back a family tree can go.
(Speaking of time, could someone please give me a rigorously proven way to explain the accuracy ranges of carbon dataing and dating by geological layers? Preferrably including an explanation as to the nature of the carbon 14 cycle, why we still have it if it's unstable, why we have any radioactive elements at all, and so on? It's one of those recurring foundation topics.)

A Twist on the standard PC repair shop
It occurs to me that there's one thing a brick-and-morter PC repair shop could do to set itself apart from others, get more customers, and increase customer satisfaction even in the face of utterly unrepairable systems.
If the system is deemed to be too expensive to fix, have a firing range on site where the customer can "take it out back and put it out of their misery." (With all appropriate and necessary supervision, of course...)

I'm annoyed at SourceForge.
I've been trying for several days now to get ImplSearchBot accepted as a SourceForge project. Both times, it's been rejected for revision as "We're sorry, but due to the thousands of project requests we get per day, we don't have time to look at all the links." (Though I didn't get the reply to the first attempt until Monday, when I submitted it on Saturday.)
I was mildly annoyed the first time, as the links I'd included pointed to the bot's existing page which contained its description of behavior and its source code, and the description wasn't that long. Still, I understood where they were coming from, and replaced all the URLs in my request with several paragraphs detailing the behavior, theory and benefit behind how ImplSearchBot works. Then I resubmitted.
The next day, Tuesday, I got another rejection notice, for the same reason. Scratching my head, I looked over the request I'd sent, thinking I'd forgotten to delete the URLs in addition to the technical description I'd provided. No dice; I'd correctly removed the URLs.
So I scratched my head some more, trying to figure out why they were complaining about links. Then I saw it. I'd included as part of its description "I created ImplSearchBot as part of administering rosettacode.org" -- I often refer to Rosetta Code as rosettacode.org, for the simple reason that the phrase "Rosetta Code" sometimes gets confused with either spoken/written language software or the software used to run old Mac software on newer Macs. Someone or something saw the term "rosettacode.org" and decided that they would have to click on it before making a host/no-host decision, and clicked the "reject because of URLs" quick-reject button.
I'll try one more time, removing mention of Rosetta Code's domain name. If it gets rejected again, I'll find someone else to host it. Google Code has a nice system going, but I know a fair number of folks who don't want to touch it because they don't like the privacy implications of having that much mineable data under the control of a single company. SourceForge was a close second choice because they've got a long and established history hosting Open Source projects, and I've participated and run projects there before. I'm not crazy about GitHub, partially because I haven't yet learned Git, partially because they're a new player, and partially because their free accounts are limited in size.

The Web is shrinking.
From 2007 to 2008, the top resolution of visitors to Rosetta Code was 1280x1024 at 27% of visits. Then, in the 2008 to 2009 range, 1280x1024, while stop the top resolution, reduced in share to 23% of visitors.
Meanwhile, 1280x800, in third for both years, rose from 11% in the 2007-2008 range to 17% in the 2008-2009 range.
(For the curious, 2nd place is held for both time periods by 1024x768, which fell from 24% of visits to 19% of visits.)
So while the width of the average viewer's browser window is staying roughly the same, the height of the browser window is shrinking.
What this means for web developers, in a practical sense, is that they have to shrink any header bar they have on their website in order to increase content exposure to viewers in that crucial first few seconds; The more uninteresting branding crap a viewer sees, the less likely he is to stick around.
Another possible approach to deal with the shrinking vertical screen space is to use Javascript to immediately center the top of the browser window on the first content div. Conveniently, if any given div has an id in Firefox, you can tread that ID the way you might have treated a named anchor in ancient versions of HTML. So if you give your content div and id of "content", having Javascript send your user to (PAGE)#content will level the top of your content with the top of their browser's viewable area--cut the fat, give them the meat. (Direct links work, too, but search engines aren't likely to point a user to a named div.)
The one tricky part is to make sure that you don't replace any anchor they might already have been intending to navigate to.

"John's Background Switcher" six out of five stars.
A background switcher app for Windows. I keep getting surprised by how competent the implementation is, and how good the feature set is. Gets six out of five stars. Would get seven if there was a Linux version. The guy ought to be making money off of it; I'm going to be hitting his donate button for sure.
I'm apparently Checkhov.

Vacation and task backlogs
So I'm on vacation now!
I'm trying to get caught up in home life and personal projects, but it's slow going. So far:
* I went to create a PHP script to convert amazon URLs to affiliate links, to give Rosetta Code some unobtrusive income. Instead, I...
* Noticed that dkf is now on Rosetta Code, and has "Wrote the Book" listed for TCL under his language table in his wiki page. Saw that the link to M4 pointed to an empty page, went to create it, discovered it just needed a redirect, and noticed...
* the language page was non-uniform, and decided to act on an idea I'd had about fixing the language template to provide more information in a more consistent fashion.
* I was getting hungry, so I threw some leftovers in the microwave and put Animusic into my DVD player to listen to.
* I copied the language template to a beta page, and went to ask for suggestions to improve it in the Village Pump, only to discover I'd already asked back in February.
* So I modified the existing VP page to point out the new beta template, suggested people go to town adding features; Anything that works well would get added to the main language template.
* I noticed that the Animusic DVD had finished playing, and had been looping in the opening screen for something approaching an hour, so I went to get another DVD to play back.
* I put the other DVD in the DVD player, and noticed my screen had burn-in. I resolved to take a picture and ask about fixing it, so I went to get my USB/SDHC card, and remembered I'd finished upgrading Ubuntu on my laptop, so I could probably just transfer it over the phone.
* Then I realized I still hadn't eaten those leftovers. Pulled them out of the microwave, and...

So I'm running Gentoo.
I was going to go with Arch, but when it came down to it, a guy I'm constantly running into on IRC offered to walk me through the Gentoo side of things. Which is essentially how I wound up getting started in Linux ten years ago, albeit with Debian.*
And "running" might be a strong word. I'm still getting things set up. But, honestly, it's not significantly harder than jumping head-first into a GUI-less Debian install was ten years ago. At least I'm not coming from a DOS/Win16/Win95 background this time...
No, I'm not saying Gentoo is less advanced that Debian was ten years ago. Well, maybe with some of the package management. But that's just a case of helping the bullet get to where you pointed the gun.
I'm sure that after I've run this for six or twelve months, I'll be so accustomed to it that it won't be an issue for me. And I can give it try for at least that long...
* Technically, I started with Red Hat 5.4, but since everyone I knew IRL ran Debian, I switched so that I could have some human support.

Weekends are made to be screwy, I guess
So, Friday, I finally got around to seeing about getting the speakers I'd blown fixed--Only to discover that the cabinets were solid, sealed units, not designed to have any sort of repair work done on them; It would cost less to buy equivalents used than to get those replaced.
So I walked out with a pair of KEF C40s. Eventually got them home (around 2AM) and hooked up, listened to them briefly and quietly (It was after 2AM, remember) and marveled at how they sounded better than anything I'd had before. Then I went to sleep.
Woke up, went to listen to them at a more interesting volume, and discovered that my PS3 wouldn't provide videogood HDMI video output for the life of me; None of the input devices could get a reaction out of it, and the only image on the screen was a line of multi-colored pixels reminiscent of the old "tutti frutti" effect in the DOS days of DOOM. Restarting the PS3 didn't to fix it.
Resigned that I was going to have to fall back on the manufacturer's warranty, I started looking around for all the components for when it came time to ship the thing to Sony. I was particularly interested in finding the composite video output adapter, as any normal troubleshooting sequence would involve testing that to determine whether and how the system was completely hosed.
Couldn't find the darn thing. So I drove over to where I remembered seeing someone waving a sign advertising a new new/used buy/sell/trade video game store, to pick one up. Couldn't find them. Had to go to Gamestop. On the way home, lo and behold, there was a kid waving that advertising sign again. He missed a sale by about an hour. (On a summer Saturday, it takes forever to get into the local mall, get into the Gamestop, buy the item and get back out.)
Get home, go to hook up the NTSC output and--there's the original cable. It was hooked up to the TV the whole time; I just hadn't been using it. Get composite hooked up again, switch to it on the TV, and it works! And the audio worked wonderfully.
Cutting the remainder of the story short, Composite and component works, HDMI doesn't, no matter how I slice it, restore it to manufacturer defaults, or juggle it upside-down under a full moon. Since component works, I can still get 1080i on my TV, but it's not ideal because some of the HD output features of the PS3 are disabled if the copyright protection features of HDMI are missing.
At this point, there's not a whole lot more I can do to troubleshoot, and it's not a certainty what or which piece of equipment is broken. It could be the HDMI cable, and I can pick up a replacement cable at some point to test that. It could be the HDMI hardware of the PS3, or the HDMI hardware of the TV, but since I only have one HDMI source and one HDMI display, that's hard to test. The closest I could come would be to use a system with a DVI output and convert it to HDMI, but I've only got one computer with DVI video output, but I haven't used it because I don't have a DVI monitor at home. I could use an HDMI2DVI adapter and plug into the TV's DVI input, but that's not particularly definitive as the TV might use the same hardware for consuming both.
But the audio's still sweet...

Google for "Bill of Federalism"
Look it over. Think about it.
My biggest complaint: It keeps making reference to protecting "unenumerated" rights and liberties. Good luck with that; For a couple centuries, we've been fighting over whether or not any given law violates our "unenumerated right" by arguing over whether or not it's a right to begin with.
It's simple logic; You can't accurately test against a category whose contents and boundaries are undefined. Either a right is enumerated, or it'll be fought over. And it's likely it'll be suppressed and curtailed, even if it is enumerated.
Personally, I think most of the "bill of federalism" is a rehash of the 9th and 10th amendments.

So everyone in the building thinks I'm gay...
Went to lunch with a couple coworkers, had a pleasant conversation with the waitress.
As we left, one coworker remarked "That's just the kind of girl I could see Mike dating."
Then the two guys I went to lunch with started arguing about what constitutes "spastic".
Then we got back to the office, and the debate about spasticism arose again, and I had to explain the context to the coworker that didn't go along to lunch. I flubbed, "and then X said, 'That's just the kind of guy I could see Mike marrying.'"
It was not a Freudian slip, I swear. (I use 'guy' as gender neutral, most of the time, and I remembered him saying 'marry', but that's probably because I think about marriage more than I think about dating.) Nevertheless, X and the coworker who actually said the original line, and another coworker who was in the room busted out laughing. My boss only hears snatches of the conversation, so I had to walk over and explain what had been said.
My boss, of course, exclaims, "So you want to marry that guy?" I'm already bent over because I'm laughing so hard, but I look over, and, at that exact moment, the owner and manager of the building had just walked in. I'm not sure it ever got fully explained to her.
I swear, if someone were to write that as a comedy skit, they'd be in poor taste for laying the gags on too deep. But that's the way it went down...

There are a couple ways I love this video
First, there's the music. Pretty trippy.
Second, I love the way it uses the flattening of the camera's perspective to allow Paprika to jump back and forth along the Z axis, and even occupy other Z-flat virtual environments without anything jarring in the flattened 2D realm of one's screen. (It really strikes me, then, how a 2D visual medium makes things possible that couldn't be what they appear to be with a 3D awareness.

Stop me if you've heard this one.
An AOL'er, a Microsoft Forum user, and the rest of the world <a href="http://ping.fm/tUpfI">meet in a newsgroup</a>...
<lj-cut>
The AOL'er is complaining that the Microsoft Forum user is using the wrong group, and is bitching her out. The Microsoft forum user isn't aware of the distinction between forums and newsgroups, gets testy, and then ignores the AOL'er, while getting good, sound advice from Microsoft MVP folks and other people from around the Internet.
In the end, the AOL'er demands that the thread be deleted and the Microsoft forum dweller be banned, while the Microsoft forum dweller says the AOL'er ought to be banned. And neither are cognizant of the fact that it's an unmoderated newsgroup.

This Is Not A Political Blog Post
(It's just a transcript of an anecdote at work which happend to take advantage of a popular slogan.)
First, it's "Yes We Can."
Then, it's "Yes, We Are."
Finally, it's "Uh? Where am I? How did I get here? What did I do last night, and why do I have a headache?"

Finally, it's "Uh? Where am I? How did I get here? What did I do last night, and why do I have a headache?"
Well, that about wraps it up for Ubuntu.
Figuring "Well, I got my laptop working again. I know what I'll run into. I know how to fix it. May as well go ahead on the desktop", I logged into GNOME and started the upgrade on my desktop Sunday night. When I woke up, it was asking if I wanted to replace a configuration file. Fine, whatever, I'm used to those questions. So I hit a couple keys to wake and re-pair my Bluetooth keyboard, and then go to click on "Yes".
Nothing happens. Can't get the keyboard to re-pair. Fine.
Plug in the USB keyboard and mouse. Still nothing. Ok...X locked up?
Ctrl-Alt-F1. Got a console VT tty. Great. Log in, kill a couple GNOME applets. Switch back to X. See dialogs for "(applet) ended unexpectedly, would you like to restart?" Still can't provide input, but I know that the video output side of X works, but the input side doesn't. Great.
So, right now, my desktop system at home is stuck with the dpkg database locked, half-way through the installation of upgrade packages from 8.10 to 9.04, and X isn't accepting keyboard or mouse input.
Now, I can still salvage the situation; I could probably use x2x to let my laptop control my desktop's screen, and finish the upgrade. Or I could spawn the vino configuration tool with DISPLAY redirected to my laptop, configure gino to allow VNC access, and then control the desktop that way.
I might still salvage it. But only long enough to make a complete backup, and throw the OS out the bit bucket. 99% of folks who use Ubuntu would not be able to weasel their way out of a UI lockup like that without installing fresh from CD. I understand they're short on beta testers, but when I asked around on IRC Monday morning, I was told that it was a known problem with the upgrade. And this is what they ship?! "Release" is not supposed to be alpha condition. And my desktop hardware isn't even uncommon. (Well, except perhaps that I was using Bluetooth for kbd/mouse)
I'm definitely switching. Taking my time, reading up on Arch, Gentoo, Mandriva, MEPIS. Screw Ubuntu. And then hit it with a hammer for good measure.

ABC meme, twisted
So I got tagged by a meme on Facebook, called the ABC meme. One of those tired "Tell <em>n</em> things about yourself, because I want to know". This one specified one descriptive for each letter of the alphabet, and the guy who tagged me provided the word for the letter of the alphabet for which he was providing descriptive information.
Old, tired and boring. So I'm twisting it. I'll do one for each letter of the alphabet, but I'm not going to tell you what word each letter corresponds to. "C" might have the answer to "Chore you hate" after it. Or it might have the answer to "conviction count". Or it might be a pun. Or a reference. The joy is in making the reader guess...
If you're fluent in languages that use a different alphabet, I recommend swapping out [A-Z] with one of those, for further twistiness.
A - About 2.5 feet.
B - 'sup
C - tanj
D - 10th
E - Never done it. Probably never will.
F - Don't they call this "E" now?
G - Whiz.
H - I believe we've found...our killer. *scream*
I - DK
J - He makes this look good.
K - Play's quite a brute, actually.
L - Nio
M - Emalbe
N - ot a chance.
O - way.
P - e, not going to go there.
Q - c-c-combo breaker!
R - You ready for this?
S - weet dreams of rythm and dancing
T - The reason one of my D&D characters dreads going to sleep.
U - Oich Oich
V - Ger
W - Too much
X - You're supposed to fill the circle in completely!
Y - Can you convert that to a bridge?
Z - Enough.

I got Ubuntu fixed.
And it's really ridiculous how--Those steps should really have been part of the installation phase of the xorg packages.
(I did try to install Gentoo, but I bit off more than I could chew by jumping straight into a minimal CD with the intent of building the whole OS from the get-go. Not a good idea; While I'm sure their walkthrough documentation is pretty good, it's not very readable under Links, and having to use screen locally because virtual terminals were disabled was annoying, to say the least.)
The fix for Ubuntu? I ran
and
a couple times, hoping in vain it might offer me some configuration options. When they didn't, I started looking for read-edid and a modeline builder. When I couldn't find them quickly and without Internet access, I shut down the system and put it off for a bit. The next time I booted it up, it booted straight into my monitor's native resolution. Apparently, dpkg-reconfigure has a read-edid step in it that was forgotten during the upgrade process.
My approach harkens back to the days on Debian when X didn't autodetect your screen's vertical and horizontal refresh rates and build modelines accordingly--I think the last version of XFree86 that behaved that way was 3.3.6. So if you knew the model of your monitor, there were websites out on the Internet that might have the vertical and horizontal refresh rates for your CRT.
If you didn't know the physical limits of your CRT, you could guess at different settings--and risk destroying your hardware--or you could try to read your monitor's EDID block. The EDID block is a chunk of data you could get back from your monitor along your video cable (and this was before the days of HDMI, where two-way communications along your video cable are assumed) if you sent the right DDC commands. DDC is a wire protocol related to I2C. If you want to know what those are, google them. In monitors that support EDID properly, the EDID block contains all the information that a computer needs to figure out the resolutions and refresh rates the monitor supports. Back in the early days of EDID, laptop displays rarely supported it correctly, but that hasn't been a common problem in over ten years; Modularization has led to broader support for hardware standards even within laptops. (I can't vouch for netbooks, though; The drive to reduce cost and size even further has resulted in more custom and SOC-type silicon, and the first thing that gets dropped from custom silicon is unnecessary features.)
I figured that Ubuntu wasn't checking the EDID block, or it would have had a decent idea what my display was capable of. Turned out, I was only half-right; Ubuntu had all the logic in there to check it, but it wasn't being called at the right point during the upgrade process.
Still considering switching to a different distribution, but it's not as urgent an interest at this point.

Setting up a couple of planets...
So I'm going to be setting up a couple of planets. One for RC folks when they write an RC-related blog entry, and another for my local LUG.
I thought of the LUG planet idea because while our mailing list was once used for technical ruminations and questions, that sort of thing gets relegated to personal blogs these days. Soon, we'll be able to aggregate any tech rumination blogs, and start the LUG discussion mechanisms turning again. (And while I've thought of it and mentioned the possibility, I haven't yet gotten the yea or nay for emailing aggregated items to the mailing list; There are likely folk there who aren't particularly interested in interacting with RSS or blog commenting systems.)
So I've got two planets to set up, and one Slice. And the definitive planet software assumes one-planet-per-system configuration, or at least doesn't have very good documentation on how to do more than that.
The nice thing is that the planet software should be extremely low-footprint, as far as slice resources are concerned; It periodically creates static files, and those files are what get served up.

My music collection
Someone asked for music recommendations. I can't tell them what to listen to, but I can tell them what <em>I</em> listen to. I've just about finished re-ripping my CD collection; There's only four or five discs to go, and they require a bit more attention to rip, as they've either got scratches, or the cddb information is missing or horribly wrong. (Which is unsurprising, because some of them have had very short runs and/or little exposure. <a href="http://ping.fm/l6wYy">Sky Flying By</a>, for example.)
I'm always buying more discs, too. Usually at a local used record store.
This list was produced with the following command:

Might be time to move away from Ubuntu
Just finished upgrading my laptop from Ubuntu 8.10 to 9.04.
I started this process when I did because I was trying to pair my Bluetooth GPS to my laptop. Simplest tool on Ubuntu for that--at the moment--is their Bluetooth configuration applet through their GNOME desktop. So I booted into GNOME, launched X-Chat so I could hang out online during the process, and started using the applet. Suddenly, my wifi drops, and I can't get it working again despite fighting with wpa_supplicant for two hours. Run lspci, and discover that the madwifi driver was misidentifying my Atheros chipset again as an older abg-capable chipset. I'm used to this; Atheros reused a PCIID when they released my chipset, and the PCIID databases and drivers tend to misidentify it. I keep the source for a modded version of the driver on-hand because I'm used to having to reinstall it every time I upgrade. I rebuilt the driver and installed it, and had the same problem. So I figured, "9.04 is out, let's give that a try."
First fail: Defaulting to a resolution of 640x480 on reboot. Makes it hard to navigate a display settings dialog when you can't see half of it...
Second fail: Providing a max resolution of 1024x768, when the LCD screen's native resolution is 1280x960. One might think this is a problem of a too-high vertical refresh rate, but reducing that via the dialog doesn't open up any additional resolution options.
And that's just in the first ten minutes after booting up.
I switched to Ubuntu from Debian years ago because Debian had hardware compatibility problems that were tricky to work around, while Ubuntu Just Worked. There's no real good reason to switch back to Debian at this point; Ubuntu has a better release rate, and maintains a current release that's typically more-current and more-stable than Debian/testing ever was. And I like that...
But if keeping Ubuntu working on this hardware is going to be this much work as a matter of course, I may as well switch to something else. I don't have any particular love for Fedora, Red Hat, SuSE or Slackware, and I'm not looking for a tiny-footprint distribution. Additionally, I frequently find myself needing to build my own packages. So it might just be worthwhile learning Gentoo.
Conveniently, there's nothing on this laptop that isn't backed up, so I can just toast the install and replace it with something else. May as well...

I haz a weekend.
Now to get some sleep. An pick up the shards of my social life. And try to remember which games I'm sopposed to attend on what weekends. And try to remember if I was supposed to be DM'ing anything, and where I was in those campaigns.
Whaddaya know? Swine flew.
Whaddaya know? Swine flew.
On the vile nature of C/C++ macros
Let's say you're using MFC. This means you're writing code assuming the presence of Windows headers.
Now let's say you want to get the current time. That's CTime::GetCurrentTime().
Except that there is no GetCurrentTime member of CTime. Why? Because the Windows headers have this line:
#define GetCurrentTime() GetTickCount()
GetTickCount() is a Windows API function that behaves more or less the same as timeGetTime(), which returns a 32-bit unsigned integer representing the number of milliseconds since the system booted up. (Or since said unsigned integer last overflowed; This integer is the basis behind the 49.5 day "inevitable" crash /. used to crow about. Only causes problems when programmers who call it don't understand what it does, or don't care if their program when the 49.5 day mark comes around.)
The net result is that since the Windows headers use a #define to define GetCurrentTime() as GetTickCount(), any code on Windows that might want to use the string GetCurrentTime() as part of a function name gets its function not-so-helpfully renamed to GetTickCount().
I haven't looked, but I rather expect that the MFC runtime DLL exports a function named CTime::GetTickCount that's wholly unrelated to the Windows API call of similar name.
BTW, you run into the same problem if you want to have a function named LoadImage; There's a define that renames it to LoadImageA or LoadImageW, depending on whether you're using MBCS or Unicode.
